The Worst is Local

Mortifications and Lies (forthcoming)
The Song in Your Head: A Way to Write and Read Poetry, ed. John Foulcher, Rigby Heinemann, forthcoming

Listen to the Poet Read
the worst loss is local
no matter what the horrors are
a mile or a metre away here
the loss is greatest here
the pain is real and bright
here we are alone with
some small blight

the worst loss is local
no matter which regime
took the child and burned
it the loss is greatest here
the child's splinter sharpest
in the luxury of trees
here is worst

the worst loss is local
no matter what angels tear
the sky out over what dark sea
the loss is greatest here
where once the candle failed
or a lover left or
skin aged

the worst loss is local
it spreads in ever diminishing
rings until we see nothing but
the loss is greatest here
the coffee burnt the kettle dry
and in the bed or bath
the deserts lie
